New Netflix Virtual Reality App Will Turn Your Front Room Into A 3D Cinema

New app will be created for compatible Samsung phones and the Gear VR , which is set to go on sale in the fall for $99

There's nothing quite watching a film on the big screen. Sure, it's comfy cosy to throw on a movie at home, but you miss that cinema atmosphere, not least when the dog keeps jumping up at the screen every time something loud happens.
Suffer no more.
Netflix has launched a virtual reality app for Oculus Rift that will bring a 3D-cinema experience, right into your front room. Though strangely enough, you won't find yourself in a movie theatre.
Movie buffs who pop on their VR headset will find themselves in the "Netflix Living Room:" a sort of rustic cabin lounge, complete with a coffee table and and a Bojack Horseman poster hung above the virtual television.
The big announcement came at Oculus' Connect 2 event, where we were told that the app was already available for existing Oculus hardware, and was being specially developed for the upcoming Gear VR, due out in the fall.
“A year ago, I had a short list of the top things that I felt Gear VR needed to be successful. One of them was Netflix,” Oculus CTO John Carmack wrote in a blog post on Netflix’s site.“Despite all the talk of hardcore gamers and abstract metaverses, a lot of people want to watch movies and shows in virtual reality.”

The company also announced Oculus Video, which will include partnerships with 20th Century Fox and Lionsgate, as well as Facebook's 360-degree videos. We can also expect to other streaming apps entering the Oculus ring, including hulu, and Twitch, which will feature gaming streams that you can view with avatars of your friends in the same room.
For the time being, you'll have to enjoy your 3D Netflix binge alone. But in the future, you'll be able to invite friends over to your virtual crib to watch a movie. No matter what part of the world they live in, you'll feel like you're snuggled up on the same sofa.
